That’s Odd – Malaysian Automaker Proton Builds A Mitsubishi Evolution

You may not know about Malaysian automaker Proton. In fact, I didn’t even know Malaysia had its own car manufacturers until a couple of years ago, when I stumbled across an episode of Top Gear in which Jeremy Clarkson destroys a Perodua Kenari hatchback because the car is so lifeless it makes the Toyota Camry, which is already an appliance, seem like a Formula 1 car.  For those of you in the know however, the name immediately calls to mind that Proton is the current owner of iconic sports car brand Lotus.

The Mitsubishi Evolution is a wonderful car. It brings smiles to my face just thinking about it. Proton apparently thinks the same way, and for some unknown reason decided to build a version of its own, somewhat. The concept is called the Jebat and was revealed at the Kuala Lampur auto show. While it’s styled to look like an Evo, an Evo it truly is not. Lurking under the hood is the 237 hp 2.0 liter turbocharged engine  pulled from the Ralliart version of the Lancer. You can think of it as what the 4G11 found in the Evo was before it went through puberty.

No one really knows if the company actually plans to build the car, but considering that the company just launched the Inspira, which is a direct copy of the Lancer, except with a Proton badge, the whole thing isn’t all that surprising. Aside from that, Proton has had a history of using Mitsubishi engines in it’s vehicles.
